Max Lewin (1918-2002) was a survivor of the Treblinka death camp but lost his entire family in the Holocaust. In 1946 he settled in Beckley and started a home renovation business and later a men's clothing store. His remarkable story can be found at WV Remembers.
Edith Levy (1930 - 2023) was born in Vienna, Austria and lost her father and entire extended family in the Holocaust. She arrived in Morgantown in 1956 and returned to education after raising her family. Her video, "A Stolen Childhood," is available here.
The US military was responsible for the liberation of several concentration camps. For instance, Patton's Sixth Armored Division, the so-called "Super Sixth," was first to witness the horrors of the Buchenwald death camp.
